Abstract
Staying Safe in a WiMax World

+ The article examines the issue of security as it relates to technological products entering the market. Questions on the security of technological solutions usually arise after products reach the market. Security is hardly taken into account when designing products and even when it is considered it is not addressed seriously or adequately. Technological solutions are always prone to security breeches even with the most careful and well designed security features so producers constantly have to be keeping up with technological trends and addressing security issues as they arise. Comparing the features of the wireless network option, WiFi, with its upcoming replacement, WiMax, the latter is noted to have far better and more advanced capabilities and security features. WiFi has experienced countless security breaches. WiMax has a wide bandwidth at 70 million BPS and it is priced much cheaper than the 1 million BPS packages. It uses an X.509 certificate mechanism and supports the Advanced Encryption Standard which makes it less vulnerable to hackers but there are still other weaknesses in its security mechanism.


+ I like the perspective taken by this article. Vendors are admitting what many have been noticing for a long time, that they hardly think about security related to the use of technological products and solutions. They are also acknowledging that the problem is solvable by coming up with one-time solutions but that constant research has to be ongoing. With this new WiMax that has come out as a replacement to WiFi, I still do not trust it. WiFi presented so many security problems that were frustrating for users. It does not seem as if WiMax is going to be much better even though there are improvements to its security. Already weaknesses are anticipated in its use so I would definitely shy away from it until the initial wave has blown over and the problems are resolved.
