Abstract
Microsoft SQL Server Runs the Security Table
By Russell M. Cozart
Eric Ogren, Enterprise Strategy Group, November 2006

+ Microsoft has the most secure database according to the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). In a comparison of the number of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposure (CVE) entries of the major database vendors including MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, IBM DB2 and the Microsoft SQL server, the Microsoft database had the least number of entries reported. The data, obtained from the National Institute of Science and Technology registry shows Microsoft to be way ahead of its competitors with no entries reported in 2005 and 2006 as compared to Oracle with 54 and MySQL with 14. Microsoft's security success is attributed to its improved security management practices. Security issues are the first concern when designing products; therefore Microsoft has been limiting vulnerability on its active interfaces by reducing the attack surface as well as discovering vulnerabilities before they begin to affect customers. To facilitate its improved security Microsoft implemented its Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) which ensures that servers are secured by design, default and in deployment.

+ The article presented some very insightful information with regards to network security. Database security is a top priority among businesses nowadays with more interactions taking place on wireless interfaces. The information in this report is useful in informing company decisions as to which database vendor to choose. All size and types of companies are well advised not to overlook security as a company's network could be crippled by unwanted intruders. Therefore my choice of database vendors, based on the data, would definitely be Microsoft.
